Q: 1997 dodge neon manual transmission leak?
I bought my son a a dodge neon (used)1997 sport 2.0L (dohc)... and i noticed a transmission leak. Problem is its a 5 speed, and i was told you can buy stop leak for auto transmissions, but this is a manual trans. Im trying2find the easy way out here until he graduates, maybe i can trade it in so im wondering do they make a manual transmission stop leak product?... and... if gear oil different from manual transmission fluid or its the same? I bought it for just local travel, and i need2know something that i can basically fix to last for awhile without having2tear down the transmission to replace seals and gaskets. Need2do something quick cause its a mess under the carport...I'm sure someone else here has this problem but all answers will be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance!
A: gear oil = manual transmission fluid. BUT, check the owner's manual, some run ATF.
Are you sure it is the trans leaking & not something like a valve cover leaking onto the trans?
If it is the trans, is it at the 1/2-shaft input? If so I believe those replace from the outside.
Are the drain & fill plugs tight?
Breather [small on top] on & open?
I've never heard of MT sealant, but I've seen a little brake fluid put into a PS system to make the seals swell, didn't like the idea though.
Q: I have a 1997 dodge neon that quits unpredictably, can anyone help?
I have a 97 dodge neon that will just die out. We have check the cam sensor, and the crank sensor but both seem to be good and working using a voltage check. The code that came up is loss of cam sensor but it still runs a little rought but it runs. The last bit of info i have is that it is was bought back by the manufacturer due to warrenty. So in other words the dealer couldnt figure it out so the had to by it back, thus leading me to beleive that maybe the PCM is bad thus causing a faulty reading. does Anybody have any info that might be helpful.
I have a 97 dodge neon. Its spits and spuders and then will just die out. Sometimes it starts right back up and will be fine and other times it takes awhile to start up and once started it runs really rough. We have had a code 54 come up all of the time, and code 11 come up sometimes. We have check the cam sensor, and the crank sensor but both seem to have the correct voltage. Leading me to beleive that the PCM is bad thus causing a faulty reading. Does Anybody have any info that might be helpful.
A: I have a Neon and have had numberous problems with electrics causing engine codes and the car to stop working.
Most of my issues actually went away with a new battery as weird as it sounds! Have you checked the wires for the sensor all the way to the other end to find where it might be shorting out?
Neons like it when you replace the spark plugs, wires and coil pack. But only use the cheap spark plugs.
Q: Where EXCATLY is the fan relay switch in a 1997 Dodge Neon?
I have got several locations from web browsing with no avail. Someone please help me. Pictures would be super helpful. I am really wanting to fix my car and be on my way.
A: How do you know it is the relay? If you check with auto zone they can show you exactly where it is. NEVER replace any part till you KNOW the problem
Q: Can anyone give me good instructions on how to replace the passenger side mirror on a 1997 Dodge Neon?
My friend ripped her's off and in an attempt to save money i want to help her replace it if possible.
A: yes its a very simple process all you need to do is remove the inside panel in back of the mirror mount look inside you will see three nuts they will be a size 10mm carefully remove them and the mirror should be loose rfrom the outside make sure not to drop the nuts into the door itself or you will have to remove the door panel to get them back, a trick is to put a small piece of tape over then end of the socket or nutdriver and then put it on the nut in back of the mirror that way it is tight to the nut be sure to tighten the new mirror really tight or it will vibrate when driving . let me know if this was helpful
Q: How do I change the Alternator for my 1997 Dodge Neon?
My brother changed my alternator a few weeks ago, and its already giving me problems, when I took it into the shop, they said it was a dud. I can't get him or anyone else to fix it this time, so I have to do it myself, I just cant figure out how to replace it this time. It has a full lifetime warranty, so I don't want to take it to a shop.
A: It's easiest on a hoist but if you can't get to one, jack up the right front and turn wheel all the way to the left.
-disconnect negative cable from battery
-remove right wheel
-remove splash guard
-on top of alternator there is a belt tension adjusting nut, you'll have to loosen the tension on the belt ( this is the hardest part due to the lack of space ) in order to remove the belt
-there is a bracket that holds the alternator ( held by 2 or 3 bolts ), this has to be removed
-with bracket gone, the alternator can come out but the space is very tight...you may have to turn the alternator at different angles to be able to squeeze it past the wheel well area

Q: Where is the emergency fuel shut off for a 1997 dodge neon coupe?
I was screwing around with my car and jumped on it and now it wont start, it has had problems with vapor lock but this is not the issue, it cranks all it want but it wont turn over and there is no fuel in the fuel rail. i figured that it would be somewhere in the r=trunk but i havent looked yet, Any advice is much appreciated.
fuses and relays are good, it's a fuel issue, i put starter fluid in the intake and it fired right up. I think it is the filter.
A: no dodge products actually run an emergency shut off that's only found on fords and mazda,s, dodge doesn't use those in their systems, all they have is the pump and relay and a fuse for the pump,so it has to be one of those that's bad,or blown, good luck.
Q: how do you take the flywheel off a 1997 dodge neon?
the part that the belts hook onto theres a bolt that holds the pully on. how do you get that bolt off?
A: If you're taking off the front pulley you "must" have that special puller. I have one. If just getting the bolt out is all you need and you don't have an air impact wrench as others have suggested, here's a simple trick... The engine cranks in a clockwise direction, right? And the bolt comes out in a counter-clockwise direction, right. What you want to do is unplug the coil and use the starter to turn the engine while bracing the bolt with a socket on a breaker bar. Just "bump" the starter to break the bolt loose. Be careful to brace the breaker bar so it won't flip outta there when you hit the starter.
Q: Where do I find transmission fluid dipstick on a 1997 dodge neon?
A: hah,u cant.they didnt make one.they want u 2 go to the dealer for this.alot of cars these days have gone to this.but neon was the first.i think its stupid idea.
Q: How do you disconnect the starter from the car of a 1997 dodge neon?
A: disconnect it or take it off,if your talking about taking it off you have to do this from the bottom of the car,and it needs to be up on car ramps or on lift rack to make it easier,i would suggest you have this done, its not as easy as most people say it is,and having the right tools will help a lot, remove the battery cable before you do anything to it,this makes sure nothing will short out on it,good luck.
Q: I have a 1997 dodge neon and need to know where the starter solenoid is located?
A: mounted on the starter.
Q: I have a 1997 Dodge Neon and the gauge cluster doesnt work at all.?
The lights work but the gauges dont even move. I've soldered the connecting pins and still nothing. I even tested the gauges seperately and they do work but in the car they dont. Anyone w/ any information on how to solve this will be greatly appriciated.
A: Usually on Neons, it's a bad connection that just needs to be resoldered but you say you have already done that. I would just pick up another cluster at a wrecker and swap it in.
Q: how do i set the timming on a 1997 dodge neon?
ive tried setting this according to autozones online manual! it said back it off 3 notches before TDC. i had done this, and it still wont start!
do i have to find the top dead center by taking the #1 spark plug out
need some urgent help!
thanks ahead to all who give advice
A: i assume you mean the timing belt, because there is no distributor. if its a sohc, the cam mark goes straight up, lightly attach the belt to the pulley with needlenose vice grips or a clothespin, wrap the belt around the water pump. then go to the crank, back it up about 1/2 to 1 tooth from the mark lining up(theres a triangle on the gear that points to a triangle on the oil pump housing), wrap the belt on the crank, and turn the crank until the slack is out of the belt and it should be in time. tension the belt, rotate the engine 2 times and recheck your marks. if its a dohc, its pretty meuch the same, but time the cams toether first. putting the back cam a little far clockwise and the front cam a little counterclockwise and you'll be in time when you get done. wrap around the crank and the idler the same way, and don't forget to rotate the engine to check your marks when your done. good luck
Q: how do you discharge the air conditioning in a 1997 dodge neon?
i want to take out my a/c and want to know how to discharge it before pulling the condenser and all the lines
A: YOU shouldn't! A qualified shop should attach a special vacuum to it.
This keeps it out of your lungs, and the atmosphere.
Q: how to change a rear main seal on 1997 dodge neon?
leaking oil from the bell housing. what steps should i follow.
done in under 3 hours. i guess we just that talented
A: you have to pull the engine or the transmission to do this on that vehicle its not an easy job,and without the proper tools to do it with its almost impossible for the home mechanic to do this, that's one job that's better left to a shop ,they can do it a lot faster and cheaper, its not an easy job and if you attempt this you need repair manual on the car before you ever turn the first bolt on it,other wise your in store for one job you,ll wish you hadn't started ,good luck.
